Victorian Senior Shield History


1994 – Ballarat – November 12th – 13th

 

The inaugural event was held in Ballarat and was contested by eight of the country associations.

 

The original associations that competed were Ballarat, Bendigo, Colac, Geelong, Latrobe Valley, Sale, Shepparton and Mildura. (Albury/Wodonga and Warrnambool did not field teams in the inaugural event.)

 

The host Association won both the Overall and Women’s divisions. Ballarat women won by four points over Bendigo and the Men’s team finished third giving them the overall by 10 points.

 

Colac Men were victorious in their division by 4.5 points from Shepparton and Ballarat.


1995 – Shepparton – November 11th – 12th

The second Senior shield, in Shepparton, featured all 10 country associations. Mildura changed their name to Sunraysia.

The Overall trophy went to Latrobe Valley by 2.5 points over Geelong. Geelong reversed the result in the Men’s winning by 2.5 points over Latrobe Valley. Shepparton and Ballarat tied for first in the Women’s. Shepparton was credited with the win but I am not sure if there was a playoff or if it was decided by pinfall.

High Men’s average was 204 by Eddie Way from Warrnambool


1996 – Colac – November 9th – 10th

Down to Colac for the third Senior shield where Sale is now bowling as Central Gippsland and ten teams again competed.

The result in the Men was the same as the previous year – Geelong first with Latrobe Valley 2.5 points behind in second place.

Geelong was also victorious in the Overall with Latrobe Valley second.

A close finish in the Women’s division with Latrobe Valley winning by 0.5 point over Geelong

High Men’s Game for the weekend was 237 by both Ron Threlfall of Bendigo and Gary Kool from Shepparton. For the ladies Central Gippsland ’s Marg Ridgeway was high game with 221.


1997 – Mildura – November 8th – 9th

A long drive for most for the fourth Senior shield with the event bowled in Mildura. The same ten teams again competed.

Geelong had a commanding 8.5 point win in the Overall after winning both the Men’s and Women’s trophies. This was Geelong’s third win in a row in the Men’s and they became the fourth different winner of the women’s trophy after winning for the first time.

Bob Hinton from Latrobe Valley was high average with 203 and Eddie Way (Warrnambool) was in the Men’s all star team for the third year running.

Sue Moroney (Geelong) and Lyn Plowright (Bendigo) were the only women over 180 average (186 & 185 respectively).

High Men’s game was Bob Hinton 246 and high Women’s game was Lyn Letts (Bendigo) with 233


1998 – Warrnambool – November 14th – 15th

Warrnambool in 1998 – ten teams competed.

Colac Men streeted the field winning the Men’s by 9.5 points from Latrobe Valley

Ballarat narrowly defeated Geelong in the overall – by 1 point and in an even closer finish won the Women’s by just 0.5 points.

Top 3 Men’s all stars were all from Colac with Merv Billing leading the way on a 211 ave. Merv also bowled the high tournament game of 268.

In the women’s division, three Ballarat ladies were in the top 5 averages – Brenda Stewart 190, Denise Samson 188 and Marg Nunn 187. High Women’s game for the second year in a row was Lyn Letts from Bendigo with a 238 game.


1999 – Bendigo – November 20th – 21st

An extra team for the sixth Senior shield with Oven’s and Murray competing for the first time.

It proved to be another commanding win to Colac in the Men’s division winning by 14 points from Shepparton. They won all 10 matches (plus 6 points for the bye) amassing 58 points from a possible 66. This also enable Colac to win the Overall for the first time.

Bendigo Women became the sixth different winner in the women’s section in six years after their 1.5 point win over Latrobe Valley.

Merv Billing (Colac) was High average (198) and high Men’s game (246) for the second year in a row. Lyn Bourke ( Latrobe Valley) was high Ladies average (190) and Dot Deigan (Colac) had high tournament game with a score of 248.


2000 – Latrobe Valley – November 11th – 12th

11 teams competed in 2000 and the home team won the overall trophy. I don’t have any other records for that year.


2001 – Albury – November 10th – 11th

Once again 11 teams competed and Colac won both the Overall trophy and the Men’s division. This was the last year Central Gippsland (formerly Sale) competed. A new association Sale & District competed

Warrnambool women won in a close finish with Colac 0.5 points behind and Latrobe Valley a further 0.5 point behind in third. High Ladies average was 176 and high game was 224.


2002 – Geelong – November 9th – 10th

12 Teams in the Men with Bairnsdale and Sale & District fielding teams for the first time. Only 11 teams in the Women as Sale & District did not field a Women’s team.

Geelong won the Overall trophy by just 0.5 point from Colac.

Colac Men won the Men’s trophy for the fourth time in five years by just one point from new team Bairnsdale.

Geelong Women also won by 2.5 points from Albury/Wodonga.

High Men’s average once again was Merv Billing from Colac (198). It was also Merv’s third time in the all stars team. Eddie Way (Warrnambool) joined him with his fourth appearance in the all stars.

Albury/Wodonga’s Di Ryan was high average in the Women’s with a 183 average.


2003 – Sale – November 8th – 9th

Tenth Senior shield was held in Sale and 12 Teams competed in both divisions for the first time. This event was meant to be held at Bairnsdale but was moved to Sale because the Bairnsdale bowl closed (05th October 2003).

Some big games bowled with Earl Smith from Sale and District bowling a 288 and Eddie Way from Warrnambool bowling a 278.

Colac won the Overall by 7.5 points from Bendigo after their Women’s team won for the first time.

In the Men’s division, Bendigo won, also for the first time, with Colac finishing 5 points behind in second.

High Averages were Wayne Mills from Latrobe Valley 196 and Gretchen Egan from Colac with 188.


2004 – Wodonga – November 13th – 14th

Back to 11 teams with the demise of Bairnsdale bowl.

Shepparton won the Overall trophy by 11 points and also won the Women’s division with Denece Jones and Marilyn Behncke both making the all stars.

Colac won the Men’s for the sixth time, by 7.5 points from Shepparton. Oven’s & Murray had their best result with a third placed finish in the Men’s division.

High game for the Men – Wayne Mills from Latrobe Valley 255, and for the Women Beryl Daniel from Geelong with a 254.


2005 – Ballarat – November 12th – 13th

A tie for the Overall between Geelong and Ballarat meant that both the Women and Men had to bowl a one game roll off to decide the winner. Geelong won with a combined score of 8 points to 4.

Colac won the Men’s for the seventh time by just one point from Albury/Wodonga, while Latrobe Valley won the Women’s also by one point with Ballarat finishing second.

Some high averages with Andrew Craig from Albury / Wodonga topping the all stars with a 226 average and Colac’s Merv Billing second with a 218 average. Denece Jones from Shepparton was high ladies average with 204.

The order of centres hosting Senior shield was changed so that it was the same order as Country Cup.


2006 – Mildura – November 11th – 12th

11 teams competed and this year the bye was bowled with the Men needing to beat 169 to win and the women needing to beat 149.

A commanding 12 point win by Bendigo women helped them win the Overall trophy by 2 points from Geelong .

In the Men’s Geelong finished winners by two points over Colac. Geelong Men bowled a record score of 920 and the tournament high game of 278 was bowled by both Paul Campbell from Geelong and Merv Billing from Colac.

Dianne Jackson from Bendigo bowled the high women’s game of 267. Denece Jones from Shepparton once again topped the ladies averages with 190.


2007 – Albury – November 10th – 11th

11 Teams again but this year bye not bowled and no points given. Sale & District bowled for the last time.

Colac were victorious in the Overall division finishing 6 points clear of Warrnambool

Geelong again won the Men’s from Colac, while Warrnambool women won for the first time since the inaugural event.

Merv Billing from Colac was high average with 206 making it the sixth time he has been in the all stars team. Lyn Letts from Bendigo (183) and Denece Jones from Shepparton (179) both made the all stars for the fourth time.


2008 – Wodonga – November 8th – 9th

Back to 10 teams and therefore 9 games bowled. Two blocks of 3 games on the Saturday and the final three in one block on the Sunday.

Warrnambool won the Overall division after a dominating 11.5 point win in the Women’s division.

Geelong Men won for the third time in a row and sixth overall in a close finish from Albury / Wodonga

Marin Ticaci from Albury/Wodonga was high game with 278.


2009 – Warrnambool – November 7th – 8th

More of the same as Warrnambool again won the Overall and the Women’s (third year in a row) and Geelong won for the fourth time in a row in the Men.

Geelong Men also had the top three averages for the weekend.

High game for the weekend was Warrnambool’s David McKane with a 268


2010 – Shepparton – November 13th – 14th

Trouble with accommodation meant that Wodonga were unable to compete. To fill the numbers up to ten a second Shepparton was invited to compete.

A close finish in the men saw Bendigo win by 0.5 point from Geelong. Warrnambool women had a convincing win to make it four in a row. Geelong won the Overall courtesy of finishing second in both divisions.


2011 – Colac – November 12th – 13th

A return to Colac for the first time since 1996. All ten teams competed with the Men bowling first.

A two horse race in the Overall between Bendigo and Geelong went down to the last game with Geelong winning by 3 points. Geelong men won for the eighth time from Bendigo and Albury/Wodonga. In the Women’s Bendigo got home by two points over Geelong.

High game for the weekend was 266 by Paul Campbell from Geelong and the high ladies game was 248 by Michelle Merigot from Sunraysia.


2012Latrobe Valley – November 10th – 11th

Down to Morwell for 2012 Senior Shield. Tough scoring conditions saw a high tournament game of 258 to Kerrie Fletcher from Warrnambool. The high Men 's game went to Paul Campbell from Geelong with a 248.  

Men and Women bowled at the same time (10 o'clock start both days), which meant an earlier finish on the Sunday.

An extremely close Men's division with just one point separating three teams going into the last game. Geelong and Latrobe Valley were equal leaders one point ahead of Shepparton. Geelong beat Latrobe Valley 4-2, but Shepparton with their high game for the weekend (805) in the final game took all 6 points and won by a single point (35-34)

Warrnambool women went through the entire weekend without losing a game and won for the fifth time in six years finishing 3.5 points ahead of Latrobe valley.

Latrobe valley won the overall by just 2.5 points from Warrnambool (71.5 - 69.0) with Geelong a distant third on 60.5pts.


In the eighteen years of Senior Shield only one bowler, Marg Nunn from Ballarat, has competed in every event.  Lyn Letts from Bendigo and Eddie Way from Warrnambool have bowled 18 of the 19.

Merv Billing (Colac) has been in the All Stars 7 times and Denece Jones (Shepparton) and Shirley Muxworthy (Geelong) have been an All Star 5 times.

Seven different Associations have won the Overall trophy and seven different Associations have also won the Women’s trophy. Only four Men's teams have been successful

288 Men and 267 Women have competed in the 19 years so far.
