EMERSON SHIELD

The Emerson Shield is named in memory of Alf Emerson, the former owner of Mentone bowl and foundation member of Goldpin Victoria.

It is a scratch five person team event with separate Men's and Women's Divisions. The tournament is contested by eligible members of the Goldpin Vic group of centres and is conducted over three stages.

1) Individual centre qualifying

2) Zone Finals

3) Emerson Shield Final

In the inaugural year (2001) only 9 centres participated and there was only a final and no zone finals. The final consisted of one full round plus a positional round to finish

For the next three years 2002 - 2004 there were 4 zones, with the top 2 teams from each zone going through to a 14 game final. In 2005 and 2006, the defending winners from the previous year automatically qualified for the final plus the top three teams from each of the zones. This expanded the final to 10 teams.

In 2007 the format changed to just the top 2 from each of the three zones. The other 12 centres were then able to participate in a repechage final with the top 4 teams also going through to a 10 team final.

2008 saw a change with just two zones with the top 5 from each zone going through to contest the final at Epping. (same for 2009).

Another change to the format in 2010 with just the top 4 teams from each zone going through to contest the final. This reduced the final from 18 games back to 14 games over the two days.
